Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) – Your Gateway to Seasonal Work in New Zealand

    Overview

The Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) is designed for workers looking to support New Zealand industries during their busiest times of the year. This visa allows you to work in New Zealand for up to 7 months in entry-level or lower-skilled roles that are critical to the NZ economy.

If you have some prior seasonal experience and want a fast, straightforward way to work in New Zealand without taking an English test, the PSV is the ideal option.

    Key Benefits

    • Short-Term & Flexible: Work for up to 7 months during the peak season.
    • No English Language Test: No IELTS or PTE required.
    • Wide Range of Sectors: Covers agriculture, meat processing, forestry, and seafood.
    • Earn in NZD: Enjoy competitive pay rates and New Zealand working conditions.

Who Is This For? (Eligible Roles)

The PSV focuses on roles where demand spikes sharply for a few months. Eligible jobs include:

    • Meat and Seafood Process Workers (Boners, Slicers, Filleting)
    • Winery Cellar Hands
    • Forestry Workers
    • Calf Rearers and Relief Milkers
    • Mussel or Oyster Farm Workers
    • Wool Handlers

    Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Peak Seasonal Visa, you must:

    • Have Experience: Prove you have worked at least 1 seasonal period in a similar role within the last 3 years.
    • Job Offer: Have a confirmed job offer from an Accredited Employer.
    • Mandatory Stand-Down: After your 7-month visa expires, you must leave New Zealand for at least 4 months before applying again.
    • Health Insurance: Required if your job contract is longer than 3 months.

    Important Note for Employers

Unlike the Global Workforce Seasonal Visa (GWSV), employers hiring under the Peak Seasonal Visa must perform a labour market test (advertising locally) and engage with Work and Income (MSD) before offering the job to a migrant worker.

    How to Apply

    Applications open 8 December 2025.

    1. Your employer completes the Job Check and labour market testing.
    2. You receive a job token and submit your application with proof of your previous season’s experience.
    3. Approval is typically faster than standard work visas due to the seasonal urgency.

In most cases, PSV does not allow family sponsorship. Since it is a short-term visa, partners and children usually need to apply for separate visas, subject to eligibility.

Processing time for the Peak Seasonal Visa NZ varies based on:

    • Application volume during peak season
    • Completeness of documents
    • INZ workload

On average, processing may take a few weeks, but delays are common during high-demand periods.

    Common documents include:

    • Job offer from a New Zealand employer
    • Passport and identification
    • Proof of relevant experience
    • Health and police certificates
    • Employer compliance documents

The New Zealand PSV is a temporary work visa and does not directly lead to residency. However, some workers may later transition to:

The Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) is not automatically renewable. Extensions depend on:

    • Continued labour shortages
    • Employer eligibility
    • Current immigration policy

Professional advice is strongly recommended before applying for extensions.

Generally, no. The PSV visa is employer-specific. If you wish to change employers, you must:

    • Apply for a variation of conditions, or
    • Apply for a new visa, subject to INZ approval

There is no public fixed list of PSV employers. Employers must meet Immigration New Zealand requirements and prove labour shortages.

    • Employers with eligibility assessment
    • Workers with employer matching and documentation guidance

No. You cannot apply for a Peak Seasonal Visa without a job offer. A confirmed offer from an eligible New Zealand employer is mandatory for the PSV visa application.

Yes. The Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) is different from the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) visa.

    • PSV is for short-term seasonal labour needs beyond RSE caps
    • RSE is a long-established scheme mainly for Pacific workers
PSV offers more flexibility for employers facing unexpected workforce shortages.

The Peak Seasonal Visa NZ is commonly used in:

    • Horticulture & viticulture
    • Agriculture & farming
    • Food processing
    • Seasonal manufacturing
    • Packing and harvesting roles

To be eligible for the Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV), applicants must:

    • Have a job offer from an approved New Zealand employer
    • Meet health and character requirements
    • Have relevant skills or experience for seasonal work
    • Intend to work only in the approved role and location

The New Zealand Peak Seasonal Work Visa is usually granted for up to 6 months (or as specified in the employer’s job offer). The duration depends on:

    • The seasonal nature of the job
    • Employer approval
    • Immigration New Zealand (INZ) policies at the time of application

PSV New Zealand is intended for seasonal workers who already have experience or skills relevant to peak-demand roles. It is commonly used when local workers are unavailable and the employer has demonstrated genuine labour shortages.

The Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) is a temporary New Zealand work visa designed to help employers meet short-term labour shortages during peak seasons, particularly in industries like horticulture, viticulture, agriculture, and food processing. This visa allows eligible overseas workers to work legally in New Zealand for a limited period under an approved employer.
