If you are currently registered with an overseas regulatory authority and meet the Nursing Council’s requirements, you may apply to become registered as a nurse in New Zealand.

The Process for Internationally Qualified Nurses

For all internationally qualified nurses other than those already registered in Australia, the Nursing Council of New Zealand has outlined a detailed process:

Step 1: Verifying Documents with CGFNS

All nurses are required to provide documents proving their:

• Identity
• Current registrations held in the last 10 years
• Nursing qualification equivalent to NZ qualifications
• Evidence of English language proficiency
• 1,800 hours of post-registration nursing experience

You must verify and authenticate your documents with CGFNS before registering to the Council.

Step 2: Apply to Become Registered

After your documents are verified, you can apply to the Nursing Council and complete the following:

• Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand Online Courses: All nurses must complete two free online courses introducing them to culturally safe nursing practice in New Zealand.
• Fitness to Practise Checks: All nurses must undergo a criminal history check.

You cannot apply directly to the Council as CGFNS must verify your documents first.

Future Pathways for Enrolled Nurses

The Council is developing a dedicated pathway to registration for enrolled nurses. Until that is in place, ENs follow the same process to verify their documents and apply to be registered. The Council will then inform you of any additional requirements.
