Parent Boost Visitor Visa – Stay Up to 10 Years in New Zealand with Your Family

Welcome Parents — Your Extended Stay in New Zealand Starts Here!

New Zealand’s newly introduced Parent Boost Visitor Visa is a game-changing opportunity for parents of New Zealand citizens and residents, effective 29 September 2025. Whether you’re longing for more quality time with your children or planning longer visits with your grandchildren, this visa allows you to stay in New Zealand for up to 10 years.

With multiple entry options, flexible sponsorship arrangements, and long-term validity, this visa is the perfect way to reconnect with family — without cutting visits short.

    Key Features

    • 5-year initial visa, with the option to apply for a second 5-year visa
    • Unlimited travel in and out of New Zealand during the visa period
    • Partners can apply and travel separately
    • Mid-visa compliance check between year 3 and 4
    • Must arrive in NZ within 6 months of approval

    Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, you must:

    • Be outside New Zealand when applying and when the visa is granted
    • Be sponsored by an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident
    • Meet character and health standards
    • Show you’re a genuine visitor (with ties to your home country)
    • Have no dependent children
    • Meet financial or sponsorship income criteria

    Financial Eligibility

You must demonstrate financial self-sufficiency in one of the following ways:

    1. Sponsor’s Income:

    • A single sponsor must earn at least the median wage
    • Joint sponsors must earn at least 1.5x median wage ($104,707.20/year)
    • For additional parents, add 0.5x median wage per parent

    2. Parent’s Own Income:

    • Single parent: NZD $32,611.28/year
    • Couple: NZD $49,552.88/year

    3. Parent’s Available Funds:

    • Single parent: NZD $160,000
    • Couple: NZD $250,000

Note: Borrowed or gifted money cannot be used.

    Health Requirements

    • Must meet NZ’s acceptable standard of health
    • Medical certificates must be less than 12 months old for first visa
    • A new certificate (within 3 months) is required at the 3-year mark and for a second visa
    • No medical waivers will be granted

    Health Insurance Requirements

Health insurance is mandatory for the entire visa duration.

    📋 Minimum Coverage (per year):

    Coverage Type Minimum Amount (NZD)
    Emergency Medical Care $250,000
    Cancer Treatment $100,000
    Repatriation $250,000
    Return of Remains $50,000
    • Must buy 12 months of coverage upfront
    • Must provide proof within 3 months of approval in principle
    • International insurers are accepted if they meet NZ standards

Failure to maintain insurance can lead to visa cancellation or ineligibility for future parent/resident visas.

    2. If eligible, receive an Approval in Principle

    Frequently Asked Questions

Immigration NZ is expected to provide reminders but it’s your responsibility to track your own dates and begin the process between year 3 and 4 of your stay.

Yes, short-term study (less than 3 months) is allowed. Anything longer would require a separate student visa.

Once your visa is approved, changes in your sponsor’s income won’t affect your visa — as long as you maintain your own insurance and meet all visa conditions. However, income will be reassessed if applying for a second visa.

No. This is a temporary visa only. If you’re interested in permanent options, you’d need to explore the Parent Resident Visa pathway — a completely separate process with different criteria.

This is a mandatory condition. If you don’t leave the country and complete the mid-visa check, your visa could be cancelled.

No. You must leave New Zealand and apply from overseas again. The process is similar to the first application — new documents, insurance, and eligibility checks apply.

Immigration NZ hasn’t announced exact processing times yet, but you should expect a few months from application to approval. This includes time to submit your insurance proof after receiving the approval in principle.

If your medical certificate is less than 12 months old and meets the health standards, yes — you can reuse it for the first visa. For the mid-visa check or second visa, a new certificate (under 3 months old) is required.

Breaching visa rules — like overstaying, working illegally, or failing to maintain insurance — could result in:

    • Your visa being cancelled
    • You being deported
    • Becoming ineligible for future visas, including residence visas

Unfortunately, no. One of the key eligibility rules is that you must not have any dependent children (under 18) when applying for this visa.

No, you can’t apply for a different visa (like residence or work visa) while holding the Parent Boost Visitor Visa. If you wish to change your immigration status, you must leave New Zealand and apply for a different visa from abroad.

Not directly. It’s a long-term temporary visa, not a residence class visa.

No. Funds must be genuinely yours — no exceptions.

Yes, partners can apply too, and travel separately.

Nope! This visa is for visiting only — no work rights included.
