Skilled Migrant Category Changes — What You Need to Know Before 24 August 2026

Immigration New Zealand has released the final confirmed details of significant changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, coming into effect on 24 August 2026. These are the most substantial changes to the SMC in several years and may open a pathway to permanent residence for skilled migrants currently on temporary work visas in New Zealand.

Here is what is changing and what it means for you.

Two New Pathways to Residence

From 24 August 2026, the SMC will include two new pathways alongside the existing Points-Based Pathway.

1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway

Designed for skilled workers who have accumulated qualifying work experience in New Zealand in an eligible occupation. Self-employment cannot be counted as directly relevant work experience under this pathway.

2. Trades and Technician Pathway

Designed for workers in eligible trades and technical occupations. Key points confirmed:

• The 120 credit requirement for overseas Trades and Technician qualifications has been removed
• New Zealand Trades and Technician qualifications must still have at least 120 credits, which can be spread across more than one qualification — where a lower qualification is a prerequisite for a higher one
• Self-employment cannot be counted as directly relevant work experience under this pathway
• INZ has published a list of eligible occupations for the Trades and Technician pathway

Points-Based Pathway — What Is Changing

For those applying under the existing Points-Based Pathway:

• Increased points are now available for New Zealand qualifications
• Less New Zealand skilled work experience is required to meet the points threshold

These changes make the Points-Based Pathway more accessible to migrants who have studied in New Zealand or who are newer to the workforce here.

Wage Settings — Simplified and Fairer

No Requirement to Meet a Higher Wage Threshold

One of the most significant practical changes applies to wage requirements. Previously, if the SMC median wage increased between the time you started gaining skilled work experience and the time you applied for residence, you were required to meet the higher rate at the time of application.

From 24 August 2026, this changes. You will only need to meet the SMC median wage that was in effect when you started gaining your skilled work experience, provided you maintain at least that rate when you apply. You will not be penalised if the median wage has increased since you began.

Grace Period for Recent Work Visa Holders

A grace period now applies where the SMC median wage increases before you start work. If you begin skilled work experience within 5 months of your work visa being granted, the wage threshold that applied on the day your visa was granted will be used — even if the median wage has since increased.

Work to Residence Pathways — Same Simplification Applies

The same simplified wage settings apply to the following Work to Residence pathways:

• Tier 2 Green List Work to Residence Visa
• Care Workforce Work to Residence Visa
• Transport Work to Residence Visa

This means applicants on these pathways also benefit from the same wage protection — the rate that applied when you started counting your work experience is the rate you need to meet.

Other Confirmed Changes

English Language Test Validity Extended

From 24 August 2026, English language test results will be valid for 5 years for applicants who hold a recognised occupational registration in New Zealand.

Accountants — New Recognised Registration

From 24 August 2026, accountants with membership of CPA Australia (Certified Practising Accountants Australia) who can undertake the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant in New Zealand will be eligible under the SMC pathway. This is in addition to existing recognised accounting registrations.

Evidential Requirements for Qualifications Updated

INZ has updated the evidence required when claiming points for qualifications. Ensure your documentation is current and meets the new requirements before lodging an application after 24 August 2026.

Genuine Skilled Employment — Strengthened Settings

INZ has strengthened the settings that support genuine skilled employment under the SMC. Applications will be assessed more closely to confirm that employment is genuine, skilled, and consistent with the occupation claimed.

What This Means If You Are on a Temporary Work Visa

If you are currently working in New Zealand on a temporary visa — including an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) — these changes may significantly affect your pathway to permanent residence. Key questions to ask:

• Do you have 6 points under the Points-Based Pathway, or do you meet the requirements of one of the two new pathways?
• Does your occupation appear on the Skilled Work Experience or Trades and Technician eligible occupation list?
• Does your current wage meet the applicable SMC median wage threshold?
• Have you been in New Zealand long enough to satisfy the work experience requirements?

The answer to these questions determines whether a residence application is viable for you before or after 24 August 2026 — and whether it is better to apply before the changes take effect or wait until the new pathways open.

Should You Apply Before or After 24 August 2026?

This depends on your individual circumstances. For some applicants, the current settings are more favourable. For others — particularly those in trades occupations or those who benefit from the new points for NZ qualifications — waiting until after 24 August will give them a stronger application.
