INZ Extends English Language Requirements to Skill Level 3 AEWV Roles

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced an important change to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) framework that will affect many future migrant workers applying in Skill Level 3 occupations.

From 1 June 2026, minimum English language requirements will also apply to ANZSCO and National Occupation List (NOL) Skill Level 3 roles under the AEWV category. Previously, these requirements mainly applied to Skill Level 4 and 5 occupations. 

This is a significant development because Skill Level 3 roles now form a large part of the AEWV workforce in New Zealand. According to the Government, around half of AEWV applications are currently being made in Skill Level 3 occupations. 

The required standard is not intended to be highly academic or advanced. The Government has confirmed that the benchmark remains around IELTS 4.0 or equivalent, designed to reflect basic everyday communication ability. 

Importantly, the change applies to AEWV applications lodged on or after 1 June 2026, even where an employer may have obtained a Job Check approval before that date.

Some transitional exemptions will apply. Existing AEWV holders whose visas expire on or before 1 December 2026 may be exempt when applying for a further Skill Level 3 AEWV to complete their maximum stay period. 

This update reflects New Zealand’s increasing focus on communication capability, workplace integration, and long-term workforce planning. It also reinforces how occupation classification, English preparedness, and visa timing are becoming increasingly important within AEWV and future residence pathway planning.
